Yacht Sales and Brokerage

Frequently we have customers ask us, "What would make a good charter yacht". The answer is a yacht priced low enough but yet with proper accomodations, ammenities and systems to satisfythe expectations of charter guest and brokers. The basics apply -

  • Is it attractive?
  • Are the cabins roomy and comfortable?
  • Does it have generator and air conditioning?
  • Is the galley and refrigeration capable of sustaining several people for a week or more?
  • Is the draft shallow enough to sail safely in the desired region?
  • Is it easy to handle and manuever?
  • Is it in good repair or will it need significant upgrades?
  • Does it or its sisterships have a successful history chartering?
  • Can it be had for a price that makes a return possible?

These are just a few questions you need to ask youself if you are considering getting into the Charter Business.

If you are planning on bareboating the vessel, then you should strongly consider the opinion of the Management Company that is marketing and caring for the boat. They know their market better than anyone and can quickly define where there is a need.

At an average length of 50' and 4 cabins+ it start becoming more economically sensible to charter the vessel as a crewed yacht. Simply put, it is cheaper to hire a full time crew than it is to pay contractors to take care of the vessel. Also with a good captain and possibly a mate, they will become more intimate with the systems and caretaking of your particular boat, and have something at stake to ensure that better care is taken to maintain the yacht properly.

One note on Crewed Yachts: If you are considering being the owner and the operator, don't let anyone know that you are the owner. The brokers will shy away from booking you, customers will feel less comfortable in your home and less like it is their boat for the week, and you will not get optimal gratuities. Put the yacht in a shell corporation for your own protection and let that corporation be the owner, and leave it at that. Owner operated vessels are frequently less professionally run than a yacht with a well rounded charter crew.

The following yachts that have are for sale and would have the highest probability of doing well in charter.
